BMI provides research and travel funds of up to $5,000 to support PhD students and postdoctoral fellows who conduct research, which is related to one of the current strategic themes of BMI, in its members’ laboratories. On a reimbursement basis, each funding award can be used to offset research expenses (e.g., subject fees, research materials) and/or to pay for conference-related expenses when research findings from BMI strategic themes related research is presented at an international conference.

Fall 2017 Application is now closed. Please stay tuned for the next round. There will be two calls per year. Applications will be vetted by the BMI Executive Committee.

Funding Conditions:

To be eligible for funding, an applicant must:

  • Attend at least 50% of BMI seminars. Examples of BMI seminars can be found here.    
  • Attend and volunteer at the BMI Annual Symposium. 
  • Name BMI as an affiliation in publications and conference presentations and acknowledge the support of the Dr. Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation.
  • For travel awards, the student/fellow must be the first and presenting author. Awards can be used to cover transportation, hotel, and registration fees and can be used in conjunction with other awards (e.g., from the graduate school) but no double reimbursements will be given. Original receipts must be provided.     
  • For research-related expenses, appropriate ethics approval must be provided. The award recipient must also show proof of having obtained research ethics training. Original receipts for expenses must also be provided.

Important Notes:

  • Awards are only provided on a reimbursement basis.
  • If the PI is not already a BMI member, s/he will need to submit an application to join BMI. Full BMI membership can be granted to faculty members who meet membership requirements upon sending an application to the BMI ExCo for approval. Student/Postdoc Members are those who are supervised by full BMI members who attest to the student’s/postdoc’s suitability for student/postdoc membership.
  • Each applicant can be supported by this award more than once, but priority will be given to new applicants.
  • MPhil students are excluded from this funding scheme.
